This data is especially interesting in light of Ezekiel Emanuel’s recent call to change Tylenol packaging in order to deter suicides (see http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/author/ezekiel-j-emanuel/). He argues that switching away from bottles of loose pills to blister packs would save thousands of lives each year.

    But, it seems, firearms are used the majority of the time, especially among men — meanwhile, women use poison or firearms in relatively equal measure, which leads me to think that gun control, as always, should be the major focus of public policy reform. It’s also clear, given this infographic, that pervasive inequalities related to race, ethnicity, and old age are accelerators of the problem of suicide.

    These issues make Emanuel’s push myopic (and not environmentally friendly or friendly to the consumer when the cost per pill rises).
